Schall Residence
The Schall Residence will always be one of our most radical designs. I’ll never forget leaving the steep cliff side site and wondering if we could even get a house nestled in its rugged terrain. We did, but it is steep. Like super steep. We had a blast designing this home. We often jokingly say “easy to draw, hard to build.” As we drew the “waves” of this home’s roof, we constantly collaborated with MSC Engineers and the brilliant craftsman at Riddle Construction, Innotech, and Western Wood Structures. The conversations were challenging and incredibly technical but essentially they were: “Are we crazy? Can we make this work?” Most builders would lament the challenge, exaggerate the budget and try to do something more typical (easier), but who is ever inspired by the easier solutions? The team at Riddle Construction celebrated the challenges. We’re endlessly thankful for clients (in this case, two of the coolest people we have ever worked for) that trusted us to create something special, and for craftsman who embrace the challenge of quality design. We want to create architecture that evokes emotions. In a world where everyone is chasing the same design trend, we want to always be different. We hope this home’s waves make you feel… Photography by David Papazian Photography
